Gemstone Guide

What is a Gemstone?

Gemstones can be referred to as a gem, fine gem, jewel, precious stone, or semi-precious stone. The name gemstone is given to a piece of mineral, rock or organic mineral that has been cut and polished. These stones then get made into jewellery or various other designs. Certain rocks such as opal and lapis lazuli and organic materials that are not minerals such as pearl and amber are commonly used for jewellery designs and therefore often considered to be gemstones.

How are gemstones formed?
A majority of gems are formed below the surface of the ground; however there are a number of different ways individual gemstones can be made. A large amount of these gemstones are created when the minerals react with water that is found just below the surface of the earth and the minerals then dissolve. This process allows the minerals to form with gemstones like opals, agates and amethysts forming when the solution cools or evaporates.
